With the writing thing, it's still important to seek expert wisdom, but somehow when I'm the one having to seek it out, it sticks with me more. I did take a creative writing class in college, but alas, I wasn't ready, I didn't know what I wanted to be writing, and I did not put in the effort that I could have.

Good thing education doesn't end once you get your degree, huh?Rose Greenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10752073931486321348noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4495617571956178362.post-11673424090324310372007-09-01T17:15:00.000+01:002007-09-01T17:15:00.000+01:00Rose,Excellent article. The first is as a reader, but then I go back and take it apart mentally as a writer. It's a very rewarding experience.

And I agree--sometimes critiques are easier all around when you know your readers primarily as writers, and then as people. Not to say that friends and family members can't turn into excellent critiquers, too, but it can be awkward at the beginning when you're working things out with all the human feelings in the way.Rose Greenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10752073931486321348noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4495617571956178362.post-44852279583908862382007-08-20T20:25:00.000+01:002007-08-20T20:25:00.000+01:00This is a good, helpful posting.I have been essent...This is a good, helpful posting.

I have been essentially doing everything you recommend here, I am happy to say.

Reading is certainly very important for writers, and when you read to learn how to write, you read in a completely different way than you do when you simply read for pleasure. I find myself repeating sentences I particularly enjoy and marvelling at how well they express emotions or give me a sense of action.

As for critique partners, I have slowly and painstakingly managed to collect a few of these over the years, but initially had to count on my husband and oldest friend. Oddly, once I'd convinced them that they had to be honest, it wasn't too painful. But I know they are relieved that I have found other reviewers.Mary Witzlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06458299046574564155noreply@blogger.com
